Education is the key to the new global economy, from primary school on up to life-long learning.

Kofi Annan, former UN secretary-general

It is a more than 50-year-old mistake to believe that "the West" can develop Africa.

The truth is: development in Africa can and must only be done by Africans.

However, the economic, social, political and cultural development and future of a country depends to a large extent on the basic education of its people.

In Africa, not all children can attend a good primary school. That is why the Makaranta association is dedicated to promoting basic education in some African countries.

The Makaranta association does not distribute "development aid". Rather, it awards an annual prize to exemplary African primary schools with the help of a competition, thus publicly highlighting them as exemplary so that their achievements can serve as a model for others to follow.
