Procedure

First, the Working Group that executes the competition determines the area where it is going to take place. The number of participating schools must be manageable and may be 30 or more depending on the situation of the country.

Next, questionnaires are handed out to the schools. On the basis of the answers given, a first evaluation* is made, with the ensuing selection of perhaps a handful schools that stand out most. These candidate schools are then visited, without notice, by members of the Working Group, in order to verify the written answers of the questionnaire.

The candidate schools must declare what they plan to do with the prize money in case they win the competition. The winning school receives the Makaranta Prize worth 1.500 Euros. In some cases it may be split between a First and a Second Prize.

The Prize is conferred to the winner in a festive and public ceremony.

See for example: Ceremony in Mozambique, 2007.
